Janey Summer – Along The Way (Holier Than Thou)
This album by Janey Summer is an excellently produced, very vocal orientated melodic rock album. Janey’s vocal style is very strong and the musical arrangement does not overpower this excellent singer, although with her style it would be difficult. Her voice is very expressive with hints of artists such as Sheryl Crowe, Michelle Shocked and Buffy Sainte-Maire but with a harder edge. There is also a similarity to the vocals of Within Temptation’s Sharon del Aden but her voice is much purer, requiring less help from the music, and would easily stand on their own as an acoustic session.
There is not a bad or weak track on offer here, and it is easy and very enjoyable to listen to the whole album – that is a rare accomplishment as there are usually one or two tracks on an album which you skip. Not in this case – the tracks are melodic and of a relaxed but firm style, holding your attention throughout.
Opening track, ‘Between Two Worlds’, gets you into the album immediately. It has the feel of a protest song but done smoothly, not in your face. Of the other tracks there are familiar rock ballads which have a new feel, including ‘Flame’, ‘Lie Along The Way’ and ‘Stranded’. These are emotional songs which are in the familiar rock ballad form but have Janey’s personality stamped all over them. Then there are the catchy upbeat tunes ‘Seeing You’ and ‘You Rock (My Chemistry)’ which have excellent lyrics which stick in you head, and it’s easy to see why these were chosen as singles from the album. The last song, ‘Sometimes’, is a big sounding track which you could imagine in a soundtrack for a movie such as The Crow or James Bond, and is a fitting finale to the album and should be considered as a single if she desires another one.
The album is eight brilliant tracks which make you want more of this artist and I, for one, cannot wait for the follow up!

This CD caught me completely by surprise. Janey Summer is a talented singer/songwriter from the U.K. On her debut release "Along The Way" her music has been described as melodic power rock. This is a fitting description for the 8-songs and 34-minutes worth of music that is contained here. The songs pack plenty of power.
The power not only lies in the music but her voice as well.
The opening track "Between Two Worlds" gives the CD a laid back start. It is not your typical hard-driving, get-the-blood-pumping opener. That's not a bad thing. It is a song that sets a definite atmosphere and it is effective in doing so. The vocals of Janey Summer are just so big sounding and she definitely conveys a lot of emotion in her delivery. "Between Two Worlds" is a steady opener always manages to hold your attention. Next is "Flame". It starts off with acoustic guitars and Janey's emotive vocals. This is another really excellent song that keeps the momentum going smoothly. The next song "Seeing You" has single written all over it. I have no doubt this song would be very successful for her if they decide to go that route. This song never fails to get your foot tapping and your voice humming along to the chorus. The guitar solo is really something special here as well. The (almost) title track "Life Along The Way" is next. It is a slower number that is not lacking in any emotion and substance. "Kept Me Waiting" is perhaps my favorite song here. It keeps a strong steady beat throughout and it is just plain phenomenal. "Stranded" is next and is indeed another highlight. "You Rock (My Chemistry)" is next and is the first single, I believe. It is a solid choice and another favorite. The final song "Sometimes" brings things to a really beautiful conclusion. This is a pretty and haunting number that will definitely pull at the heart-strings and send a chill down your spine. The song definitely builds and builds. Definitely, read along with lyrics on this one. Vocally, she reminds me a bit of the great Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde. All music and lyrics were written by Janey Summers and she proves that she is quite talented in that respect as well. The lyrics in particular are very good and something I think the listeners can relate to. Stylistically, I hear a 70's influence in the songs but done with a current flavor. Overall I really enjoyed the songs that are presented on "Along The Way". This is definitely not a metal release per se, but it absolutely rocks. Melodic power rock is indeed an apt description. "Along The Way" features a strong and diversified collection of rock songs that come from the heart. I am sure that we have not heard the last of Janey Summer. Rating : 8.5/10 Femmetal.net May 2009
Janey Summer has been performing as a rock vocalist for several years, and has fronted a number of covers bands both in the UK and Australia. She has considerable experience of performing in many venues both as original artist and fronting her current covers band, Rock Godz. Over the last two years, she has developed her own material and built up a fan base as a solo performer and Along The Way marks her debut album. Whilst primarily a melodic rock album it takes elements form the classic rock acts of the 80's (such as Rainbow, Whitesnake and Meat Loaf) whilst offering a contemporary slant and also has a foothold in the some of the darker, female-fronted goth rock releases of recent times.
In terms of vocal power and ability Janey can be favourably compared with long-time Meat Loaf collaborator Patti Russo, having a similar dark and husky quality that proves effective on the likes of 'Flame' and the power ballad 'Stranded'. The immediate melody of 'Seeing You' is both upbeat and catchy and the album closes with arguably the strongest track in the form of moody rocker 'Sometimes' that has shades of Evanescence.
Janey can take real inspiration from releasing her own album of original material and at just eight songs it certainly leaves you wanting more. Hopefully there will be much more to come from her in the future and she clearly has the potential to evolve into a major talent on the melodic rock scene. Sea Of Tranquillity USA May 2009
Tasty morsel of melodic hard rock, with a voice to die for. Kicking off with 'Between Two Worlds' with it's near gothy intro, it is obvious from the start that we are onto a winner here, and begs me to ask the question as to why the major record labels seem to keep ignoring good rock/metal talent here in the UK! Second song 'Flame', is another awesome song which again showcases Jamey's amazing vocal style. Other total faves of mine are 'Seeing You', the slower 'Lie Along The Way', 'You Rock (My Chemistry)' and 'Sometimes' - what a way to end an album. These all feature on an album to be perfectly honest that is a rock solid release ... Super stuff, 9/10 Reviewed By Ravenheart
"Classic emotional rock songs of love and life from Bridgwater's Janey, whose guitar-based music kicks hard. Clever production ensure the eight tracks form a work of strength and puts the emphasis squarely on melody and Janey's bold, impressive vocals." Reviewer - Keith Ames
You Rock My Chemistry , great track, could be top of the charts by Valentines Day Blast Radio
Janey Summer is the best female Rock vocalist that I have ever heard. She is based in the south west of England. Janey has mastered a harmonically powerful and raunchily bluesy vocal style driving an absolutely superb voice with such power, finesse and style. Her first release will hit the main retailers in February this year, a single called ‘You Rock My (Chemistry)’, this is a beautifully written song with composition and arrangement to match or top any other. A cracking tune, with a gloriously powerful and catchy chorus, topping such soothing and intriguing melodies. This song, like all of her work, brings out all the best in Janey’s wide vocal range, from gloriously bluesy harmonics to full on raunchy Rock’n'Roll. Her album ‘Along The Way’ was released in August 2008.Given the opportunity, Janey could easily match the best of the all time greats
and rise above them with ease. The Rock and Roll Report
You Rock My Chemistry - This is the first song I have heard by Janey Summer , the song is catchy and Janey's smokey
voice is very appealing. If future releases match this then I think a bright career is in the making.

"Someone with very big hair once said that God gave rock and roll to us. That's easy to believe when you consider Janey Summer, a one-woman balls-to-the-wall bombardment... she could be compared to Dio, Bon Jovi and even Cher. Come, all ye rockers, to the temple of the queen." Domm Wills, Festival Review
"Provides those nostalgic for late '80s-early '90s modern-rock radio a much-needed fix... hook-laden and memorable."
